Samuthirakani is an Indian actor and film director, who works predominantly in Tamil films apart from appearing in several Telugu and Malayalam films. He worked as an assistant to director K. Balachander. He won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2016 for Visaranai.

Samuthirakani was born on 26 April 1973 in Sethur, Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu. Samuthirakani did his B.Sc. in Mathematics from Rajapalayam Rajas college and also earned a Bachelor of Laws from Ambedkar Law College. He belongs to an educated family, his father’s name is Pandiyaraj and his mother’s name is Lakshmi Amal.

He always wanted to be an actor so he has said that people used to tell him that he didn’t have the necessary physical appearance or talent to be an actor. That’s why in 1997, he, Sunder K. Joined as an assistant director under Vijayan. After that K. Balachander spotted him and was recruited as an assistant director. In the early 2000s, he started his career as a director. He launched a shelved film Uyir Nanbanukku starring Cheriant before making Unnai Charanandhen (2003) exclusively for SPB Charan. He got his breakthrough film Naadodigal in 2009 which was successful at the box office. Samuthirakani directed two Telugu films Shambo Shiva Shambo (2010) and Janda Pai Kapiraju (2015). did a good start to his career.

Samuthirakani, who directed and starred in Samuthirakani Original Appa (2016), directed the Malayalam version Akashmittai (2017) with M. Padmakumar. He also played an important role in Rajinikanth’s film Kaala (2018). In 2020, Samuthirakani starred in the Telugu film Besides, Ala Vaikunthapremulu.
