About Arunima Sinha:
Arunima Sinha is an accomplished Indian sportswoman and mountaineer who has achieved several significant feats. She holds the distinction of being the first female amputee in the world to climb seven of the highest peaks on each continent, including Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Kosciusko, Mount Aconcagua, Mount Denali, and Mount Vinson. Her journey to the top of these mountains began after a tragic incident in 2011 when she was pushed off a running train by robbers, causing severe injuries to her left leg and spinal cord.
Arunima’s ultimate goal was to scale each continent’s highest peak and raise the Indian national flag on top of it. By 2014, she had already accomplished this feat on seven of the world’s highest mountains. In 2019, she completed her final summit of Mount Vinson in Antarctica, achieving her goal. Arunima’s exceptional achievements in sports and mountaineering have earned her many accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015 from the Government of India. This award is one of the highest civilian awards given in India.
Arunima Sinha was born on 20 July 1989 in Akbarpur, a town in Ambedkar Nagar near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, India. Her father served in the Indian Army, and her mother worked as a supervisor in the health department. Arunima had an elder sister and a younger brother.
After her father’s death, Arunima’s mother worked hard to take care of the family. Arunima was a talented sportswoman and played both football and volleyball at the national level. She aspired to join the paramilitary forces and even received a call letter from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
However, tragedy struck when Arunima was travelling to Delhi and robbers snatched her bag, causing her to fall from the running train. She suffered severe injuries and she was unable to move. Unfortunately, a train coming from the opposite direction ran over her leg below the knee. The locals helped her and took her to the hospital. This accident changed Arunima’s life forever.
Arunima Sinha, a former national volleyball and football player, was pushed out of a train by hooligans trying to steal her bag and gold chain while she was traveling from Lucknow to Delhi in April 2011. She suffered serious leg and pelvic injuries, and her leg had to be amputated to save her life. Despite her claim that she was pushed from the train, an inquiry by the police suggested that she either attempted suicide or met with an accident while crossing the railway tracks.
However, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court ordered the Indian Railways to pay Arunima Sinha compensation of ₹500,000 (US$6,300). She was later provided with a prosthetic leg free of cost by a private Delhi-based Indian company. Following national outrage, the Indian Sports Ministry provided her with compensation of ₹200,000 (US$2,500) and recommended a job in the CISF, while the Indian Railways also offered her a job.
Arunima Sinha, the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest, was honored by the Uttar Pradesh government with two cheques totaling Rs. 25 lakh. She was also congratulated by Jitendra Singh on her achievement. Sinha is now dedicated to social welfare and plans to open a free sports academy for the poor and disabled, which she will fund with awards and seminar earnings. She wrote a book called “Born Again on The Mountain.” She was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2015. Additionally, she was awarded the Tenzing Norgay Highest Mountaineering Award in India, similar to the Arjun Award.
